Love the One India Activities

At Love the One India we are passionate about children accessing their child rights.

Love the One India is based in one the one poorest states of India, Odisha.

As we began our work in 2014, the board of the organisation decided to concentrate on health, educational and childcare activities as the entry point programme in and around the city of Berhampur for needy children in the area, and thus, the organisation has been taking efforts to extend services in the community as well as helping many poor communities that are around the city and nearby villages, also now stretching to other districts.

Our model of care has always been centered around the child providing a full package of care. Children need nutritious food, health care, education, family support and a safe place to grow and thrive. This is the very core of our work at Love the One India and we are seeing transformative changes in our children and their families.

Health and Disability

Love the One India works alongside LTO project of Sahanubhuti. Together in partnership we have set up a Children's Centre for children with physical and mental disability. We also provide regular health care and check ups for the children who are enrolled in our educational centres as well, plus other children in their communities as well.

A number of children either in the school, EPIC centres or Children’s Centre have very complex medical needs, some requiring surgery and treatments in hospital from other specialists. This includes heart surgeries, orthopaedic surgeries and cleft palate surgeries. Our medical team grew in capacity to deal with these children and took them to various places including Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Visakhaptnam and CMC Vellore.

We have helped the ‘Children’s Centre’ for children with mental and physical disability became much more established and able to provide more comprehensive therapy and specialised educational teaching. More and more children with disability local to Berhampur now come on a daily basis. We also provide ‘therapy weeks’ for families of children with disabilities who live in remote villages across Odisha.

Education - Love the One Primary School and EPIC pre-schools

LOVE THE ONE SCHOOL:

At Love the One India we believe passionately that a good education is the way forward in helping to break the poverty cycle in this generation.

We have been privileged to help provide funds for the midday meals at the Love the One School, and also supported the costs of the uniforms and books which are provided free of cost for all the poor children from our communities who are enrolled.

‘Love the One’ English Medium School formally opened in April 2016 and now the classes range from UKG to standard 6. We have nearly completed the school registration with the government providing the CBSE curriculum and have been complimented on the excellent standard of resources and child centered schooling we are providing.

We have helped input, with skilled international volunteers, to help the school staff team learn to teach in a child centered manner. We stand against corporal punishment strongly, and we teach in creative ways and allow the children to learn through problem solving rather than just memorisation.

EPIC PRESCHOOLS FOR THE 0-5s:

Education begins early though play! We help to support local EPIC centres in and around Berhampur and Gopalpur for the 0-5 years age group. The children who we enroll into EPIC are carefully selected after an extensive community survey and community meetings. Only the very poor attend our centres and everything is completely free of charge for them. We work in local fishing villages and local slums.

Many young babies and children in impoverished situations are left in mud huts alone whilst their parents go out to earn a small daily wage. Many young children can die from this type of neglect through illness, snake bites, dehydration, accidents as they roam freely or even trafficked.

The children thrive in a child friendly stimulating environment with good resouces to learn through play. It has been our privilege to help pay for safe transport to and from the EPIC centres, provide electric, gas and food for the children, resources and play equipment, provide staff salaries for local community mums as we train them as excellent preschool teachers and baby carers. We have also designed lovely simple uniforms for all our EPIC children which makes them all look so smart!

Allowing the young children to begin at an early age in our project helps to sensitise their families early to the value of education and they are ready and excited to transfer to 'big school' once they reach 5 years! They then arrive healthy, well nourished, clean and hygienic, disciplined, happy and thriving. Early intervention works!

Children and Youth Programs

The children and youth we work with are often traumatised, neglected and abused. It is important for them to have some positive memories of childhood to allow the healing to begin.

Every year we aim to give lots of children and youth a winter fun party during the cooler holiday season. Each year we cater for around 700 very needy children and young people from some of the communities where our EPIC centres are located, plus a poor rural community in the Paralekamundi area of Gajapati district. Each winter party the children get given in advance their 'Golden Ticket' and they arrive full of excitement and suspense! Each child gets to experience an amazing themed party full of games, competition, fun and delicious food. The children go home tired but full of smiles! They also take home useful hygiene kits for their households, plus gifts such as cricket bats and balls, badminton sets, dollies and teddy bears depending on their age group. We also take single and group photos and put them in frames to make the party memorable and unforgettable!

Investing in infrastructure and human resources

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Love the One India began with small humble beginnings and finance, but with a big heart and a big vision to reach many children across Odisha. Love the One (UK) has set the foundation of the work but we are excited that as Love the One India we are growing and working towards having increased funding from those kind people from India who want to donate to the neediest children in our nation, CSR from companies who want to help use ther profits to improve India and we are also working towards having our own FCRA to allow international donations and grants to made toward this vital work.

We are expanding our work in all areas and so we have needed to focus some  funding towards improving infrastructure and invest in better office space and equipment for the administration team.

A focus was also put on training for new and older staff and volunteers. We  aim to keep standards of excellence in the organisation by having bi-monthly training sessions for all staff on Wednesday afternoons. This time is spent in improving understanding team work, conflict management and skills in how to provide excellent child care in all areas, uniting us in having one vision, to work as one family and to work with our 6 core values always at the forefront of our mind!

VOLUNTEERS - International and National:

Each year we have a number of volunteers from overseas as well as from within India who very kindly come and offer their time and energy to help with the many activities at Love the One India, from doctors to teachers to students on their gap year from school. All our volunteers come under the Indian leadership of the projects and love to experience true Indian hospitality and community life.
